the difficult:
if we lived there it will be hard to get used to people smoking in restaurants. People still smoke a lot.
the air quality is bad, you could see it and you could feel it. and in some places it is just grey all the time, like Chengdu. Even in the short time I was in China I missed seeing a bright blue sky, I missed the quality of light, the clear sunshine.
the good:
inexpensive foot massage available everywhere
some places we visit I feel like I can check off and don't need to go back - that wasn't true at all for China, in fact the desire to live there was even stronger.
one day we got to read the Intl Herald Tribune, which must mean it is available. It was great. Books in english are available, it looks like movies in english are also available.
the subways and buses were great, at least at non-rush hour times, they were easy, fast, clean, cheap.
I loved the gardens we saw in suzhou, I would like to find a way to visit them when there weren't so many people. the gardens had dedicated spaces for meditating, brush painting and reading, although now they were roped off to just be looked at, but still I loved being in that culture
high speed train was great.
